E-Wastes

E-wastes are classified as hazardous wastes under the Basel Convention, to which Mauritius is a party, and under the Environment Protection (Standards for Hazardous Wastes) Regulations 2001. The presence of heavy metals, including lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and flame retardants beyond threshold quantities in e-wastes make them particularly hazardous.  Although our country may not be endowed with any mineral deposits, it is considered that through e-wastes there will be possibility to recover a range of rare and precious elements namely silver, platinum or gold, which could be of use for industrial and manufacturing purpose.
