The Environmental Law and Prosecution Division is mandated to establish the enabling legal and institutional instrument for environmental protection, management and conservation. In light of lessons learnt from emerging local and global environmental challenges and with a view to achieving targets relating to the Sustainable Development Goals, the Environment Protection Act 2002 was repealed and replaced by the Environment Act 2024. This legislative framework provides for the protection, management and conservation of the environmental assets of Mauritius. The Division is also responsible for developing and reviewing environmental regulations and standards for the protection of the air, land and water so as to safeguard human health and the environment. The Division also follow-up on court cases before the Supreme Court, the Intermediate Court and the Environment and Land Use Appeal Tribunal (ELUAT), with the assistance of the Attorney General’s Office. The Division also conducts prosecution of environmental offences under the EPA 2002 and EA 2024.
