One of the key tasks of the Division includes the processing of Environmental Monitoring Plans submitted by proponents after an EIA Licence has been issued. An Environmental Monitoring Plan describes how adverse impact of a particular activity during its design, construction and operational phases will be mitigated, controlled and monitored.
The Division is also responsible to process applications to issue Completion Certificate after construction phase of the activity which has obtained a PER or EIA or SEA Licence/ Approval, as provided under the Section 52 of the Environment Act 2024.
A PER/EIA/SEA Monitoring Committee, set up under Section 29 of the Environment Act 2024, comprising concerned stakeholders, is also in place for effective post monitoring exercises.
In case of non-compliance, the Division recommends appropriate enforcement action to the PER/EIA/SEA Monitoring Committee, which takes appropriate remedial measures in accordance with provisions contained in the Environment Act 2024. The latter Committee has also the tasks to recommend the issue of Completion Certificate.
The Division has also been entrusted to implement the relevant obligations of two chemical - related Conventions namely the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Minamata Convention on Mercury signed by Mauritius.
