 E- Waste Management

E-wastes are classified as hazardous wastes under the Basel Convention, to which Mauritius is a party, and under the Environment Protection (Standards for Hazardous Wastes) Regulations 2001. The presence of heavy metals, including lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and flame retardants beyond threshold quantities in e-wastes make them particularly hazardous.  Although our country may not be endowed with any mineral deposits, it is considered that through e-wastes there will be possibility to recover a range of rare and precious elements namely silver, platinum or gold, which could be of use for industrial and manufacturing purpose.

Government has approved  the establishment of an E-Wastes Management System in Mauritius, involving the private sector. Accordingly, discussions  has started with the MCCI for the setting up of the appropriate mechanisms and modalities for the operationalization of the system.
