Press Conference by the Hon J.R.Dayal, Minister of Environment Sustainable Development, and Disaster and Beach Management, on 23 October 2015 on the Biocaching Project

What is Biocaching?

Biocaching is a concept under development and aims to be an educative game, based on observing and taking pictures of natural species in both the terrestrial and marine environment.

It is an innovative concept that engages the public and youngsters to conduct biodiversity survey in their immediate environment, be it forests, natural parks and reserves, the coastal ecosystems, etc.

It puts the power to conduct a local biodiversity survey in anyone hands. In this way, it increases our scientific knowledge, encourages people to conduct research and share information among themselves.

Who will it target?

It is people of all ages who uses mobile application.  It englobes children, youngsters, elderly people and even tourists.

      ·       Families can search for species in their own garden.

      ·       Schools can use it to teach about nature.

      ·       NGOs and Force Vive

      ·       The government can also use it to sensitise its citizens and better protect its bio diversity, be it marine or terrestrial.

Our focus will be children and youth who shall shortly be on Vacation.

What are the benefits to participants?

It is all about:

      ·       acknowledging and valuing nature,

      ·       doing research,

      ·       sharing findings,

      ·       protecting and improvingtheir environment,

      ·       promoting sustainable development (refer to Goal 14 and 15 of annex 1) all while enjoying the activities.

Phase 1: About the Biocaching game in the local conte

xt:

The game will include sharing observations in social media and thereby users can share knowledge and inspire themselves and others while having fun outdoors through

play.

Bio

cac

hing will involve, motivate, educate and encourage collaboration amongst youngsters and all citizens in general.

Best works will be rewarded e.g cash prizes, tickets for safari tours,

Phase 2: Crowdsourcing of data for science at Global level.

Observations gathered by our people may be forwarded to global biodiversity databases through GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility), who makes all the data freely available to science and to the general public. Biocaching is crowdsourcing of scientific data that can be used in big data analytics by scientists.

Bioc

aching concept is recognized by the UNEP. It was recently presented at the Eye on Earth Summit in Abu Dhabi. It has been recognized by UNEP as an example of the innovation that is needed to follow up on the recently defined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially the 14th and 15th Goals.

A pilot survey involving young people and inhabitants in the Vicinity of Le Dauguet will be shortly undertaken.
