Sustainable Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Mauritius
Training Workshop on Sound Management of Chemicals
The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development is organising a series of eight half-day training workshops on the 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 29th September 2014 and 1st , 2nd, 3rd and 6th October 2014, at the Voilà Hotel, Bagatelle, under the project ‘Sustainable Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Mauritius’. This project is in line with the Stockholm Convention to which Mauritius is party.
The project was initiated in 2008 with the objective of removing POPs from the environment of Mauritius and developing alternative strategies for Malaria Vector Management.
The “Responsible Care Programme” is one component of the project with the objective to raise awareness on sound management of chemicals.The Ministry of Environment & Sustainable Development has produced four pamphlets under this programme namely:
(i) Laboratory Safety Practices;
(ii) Sound Management of Chemicals at the Workplace;
(iii) “Conseils pratiques sur l’utilisation des produits chimiques agricoles”; and
(iv) Managing Household Chemicals.
The pamphlets will be launched on 22 September 2014 at the opening of the sensitization programme on sound management of chemicals. The pamphlets will provide participants with practical and useful tips in the safe handling, storage and disposal of chemicals and on actions to be taken in case of accidents. The eight workshops will be targeting some 400 participants from the public and private sectors and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), including representatives of Consumer Associations.
