National Environmental Laboratory
As the scientific arm of the Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Development, Disaster and Beach Management, the National Environmental Laboratory (NEL) monitors environmental quality to ensure compliance with prescribed environmental standards.

The NEL performs a number of physicochemical and microbiological analyses to assess surface and groundwater quality and collaborates with other laboratories for monitoring, analysis and reporting. As an accredited laboratory (MS ISO/IEC 17025), the NEL also develops analytical methods. As per the MS ISO/IEC 17025 international standards, the NEL’s analytical results can be used as evidence in court cases.

Presently, the NEL is equipped with three mobile ambient air quality monitoring stations, namely a Particulate Matter Station (to measure Particulate Matter: PM 10, PM 2.5 and Total Suspended Solids), a Gaseous Analyser Station (to measure gaseous pollutants, namely, sulphur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and carbon monoxide) and an Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Caravan(to measure Particulate Matter and the above gaseous pollutants).

Air quality monitoring is carried outacross the island by the NEL in response to public complaints on air pollution through the pollution Prevention and Control Division.
